Where do downloaded videos go on iPhone and Android?

Downloads folder, Files app, Photos and the Android media scanner — where each file actually lands and how to move it.

Updated

The file is almost never lost

"The download finished but the video is nowhere" is one of the most frequent mobile complaints, and in nearly every case the file is exactly where the operating system put it — just not where the person looked. Phones separate the download folder from the photo gallery, and only some file types cross between them automatically.

Knowing the two or three places your system actually uses turns a five-minute hunt into a two-tap check.

iPhone and iPad

Safari writes browser downloads to a single location: Files › On My iPhone › Downloads. The blue download arrow next to the address bar is the fastest route — tap it, then tap the file to jump straight to it.

  • To move a video into Photos: open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video.
  • If Safari is set to iCloud Drive, the file is in Files › iCloud Drive › Downloads and may still be uploading.
  • Chrome and Firefox on iOS use the same Files-based storage, since all iOS browsers share the system download handler.
  • Audio files stay in Files; the Music app does not index arbitrary downloads.

Android

Android stores browser downloads in the shared Download folder on internal storage. Beyond that, a background media scanner indexes recognised video and image files, which is why a downloaded MP4 usually appears in Gallery or Google Photos on its own within a minute or two.

  • Open the Files or My Files app, then Downloads, and sort by date to see the newest item first.
  • Chrome's three-dot menu › Downloads lists everything the browser fetched, with a direct link to each file.
  • Not seeing it in Gallery? Restarting the phone forces the media scanner to run again.
  • Samsung, Xiaomi and other manufacturers ship their own file manager, but all point at the same Download directory.

Real cases where files genuinely go missing

  • The download never finished: a partial file may be removed automatically, so check the browser's download list for a failed entry.
  • Storage was full at the end of the transfer, which fails silently on some devices.
  • The browser was in private mode and the download list was cleared on exit — the file itself usually survives in Downloads.
  • A cleaner app was set to empty the Downloads folder on a schedule.
  • The filename came from the source title and does not match what you searched for; sorting by date is more reliable.

Keeping your library tidy

If you save media regularly, decide on a destination once. Move videos into Photos or Gallery so they sit alongside your other footage, and put audio in a folder your music player indexes. Renaming files as you save them — speaker name, date, topic — is far more effective than any search feature later on.

Downloading one item at a time also helps here: each file is saved, checked and filed before the next one exists, so nothing accumulates unnoticed in the Downloads folder.

Conclusion

On iPhone, look in Files › Downloads and save to Photos if you want it in your camera roll. On Android, look in the Download folder and let the media scanner do the rest. Once you know which of those two paths your device uses, a "missing" download becomes a ten-second lookup — and if a file truly never arrived, the browser's download list will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my downloaded video in the Photos app?
On iOS, Safari saves browser downloads to the Files app. Photos only receives it if you open the file and choose Save Video.
Where does Chrome on Android save files?
In the shared Download folder on internal storage. Chrome's own Downloads screen links straight to each file.
I downloaded an MP3 and can't find it in my music app.
Most music apps index a specific folder. Move the file to Music, or open it from Files and share it into your player.
Can I change the download location?
