How to convert a video to MP3

Extract the audio track from a video, choose a sensible bitrate, and end up with a file that sounds right and fits your storage.

What video-to-MP3 conversion actually does

A video file carries at least two streams: pictures and sound. Converting to MP3 discards the picture stream and re-encodes the remaining audio into a standalone MP3 file. Nothing is added — the ceiling is whatever the platform published.

That matters when you set expectations. If the source only offers 128 kbps AAC audio, asking for a 320 kbps MP3 produces a bigger file, not a better-sounding one.

The workflow in three steps

  • Copy the link of the single video whose sound you want.
  • Paste it and wait for the available audio renditions to appear.
  • Choose a bitrate, then save the MP3 to your device.

Choosing a bitrate

Bitrate is how many kilobits of data each second of audio is allowed to use. More data means the encoder throws away less detail, and the file grows proportionally.

BitrateRoughly per minuteBest for
128 kbps~0.96 MBSpeech, podcasts, phone speakers
192 kbps~1.4 MBEveryday music on earbuds — the sensible default
256 kbps~1.9 MBGood headphones, quiet listening rooms
320 kbps~2.4 MBArchiving, high-quality sources, critical listening

bitrate compared in detail

File size versus quality

A one-hour interview is about 58 MB at 128 kbps and around 144 MB at 320 kbps. For spoken word the higher setting buys nothing audible, so the smaller file is objectively the better choice.

Music is where headroom helps. Cymbals, reverb tails and dense mixes are the first things a low bitrate smears, and those artefacts become obvious on decent headphones.

Mobile and desktop use cases

  • Commuting: 192 kbps keeps a week of listening inside a couple of gigabytes.
  • Car audio over Bluetooth: the wireless codec is the bottleneck, so 192 kbps is plenty.
  • Editing a podcast you recorded: take the highest bitrate available and cut from that.
  • Language study: 128 kbps speech files sync quickly and use almost no storage.

Common errors and what they mean

"No audio rendition available" usually means the source only publishes muxed streams to authenticated clients. "Media not found" points at a private, deleted or region-locked item. A conversion that stops midway is normally a transient network fault — a fresh link and a retry is the first thing to try.

Permission comes first

Extracting audio does not change who owns it. Convert recordings you made, tracks you have bought a licence for, or material released under terms that allow reuse. Distributing a converted file publicly is a separate act with its own legal weight, and the rules differ by country.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting to MP3 lose quality?
Slightly, because MP3 is lossy and the source audio was already compressed. At 192 kbps or above the loss is inaudible for most listeners on most gear.
MP3 or M4A?
M4A (AAC) is a little more efficient at the same size, MP3 plays on absolutely everything. Pick MP3 for old car stereos and MP4-era devices.
Can I convert only part of a video?
Not in DOWNBOX. Download the audio and trim it in any local editor if you need an excerpt.
