How to download videos on iPhone and Android
Where files land, how to move them to your gallery, and what to do when the browser blocks a save.
Updated
On iPhone and iPad
Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in the Downloads folder on iCloud Drive or on the device. Open Files, tap the video, then use Share to save it to Photos.
If nothing happens when you tap download, check Settings > Safari > Downloads and confirm a destination is selected.
On Android
Chrome puts files in the Downloads folder and shows a notification. Most gallery apps index that folder automatically after a few seconds.
If the save is blocked, allow storage permission for the browser, or long-press the download button and choose the explicit save option.
Save data while you are out
On mobile connections, 720p is usually indistinguishable from 1080p and roughly half the size. For talk-heavy content, MP3 audio is a fraction of either.
When the save fails
- Storage is full — mobile browsers fail silently when there is no space left.
- A content blocker or private-relay setting is intercepting the request.
- The tab was backgrounded mid-download; reopen it and start again.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an app to download on a phone?
- No. A browser downloader works in Safari or Chrome, and installing unknown download apps is a common source of adware.
- Why can't I find the file after downloading?
- On iOS look in Files > Downloads; on Android open the browser's Downloads list, which links straight to the file.
- Can I download while the screen is locked?
- Mobile browsers usually pause background downloads. Keep the tab open until the save completes.
